Memorial Day Triathlon

Monday May 28, 2007 will mark the first annual Fountain Valley 3rd Ward Triathlon. We will be completing a "Sprint" triathlon which allows some wiggle room on distances. We expect the distances to be roughly:
  • Swim: 1/4 - 1/2 Mile
  • Bike: 12-14 Miles
  • Run: 2-3 Miles
The course is currently being designed under the direction of our fearless Elder's Quorum leaders and will be published shortly. A map will be provided as soon as possible. Suggestions are welcome.

The first suggestion received is to Swim in Newport Harbor, Bike along the river trails and run around the Greenbrook greenbelt.

For those who don't want to swim, bike and run you can participate by:
  1. Watch bikes while participants swim
  2. Watch bikes when they're dropped off to run
  3. Provide cups of water along the way
  4. Man the starting gate
  5. Man the finish line
  6. Provide medical assistance as needed
  7. Photography
A training regimen is available to anyone who wants it. It's a structured 2 month schedule that will make sure you survive.

Since everywhere will be busy memorial day, what do you think of running down one side of the river trail to the beach(we could start at hamilton) then do a short rough water swim around a buoy or something and then bike up the other side of the river trail? That way we don't have to deal with transportation between locations. We could have one station at the start, one at the river jetties ( where we could park to unload bikes) and one at the end. We could even make the bike a loop and end back at the beach, although this would make the final leg brutal because we would have a head wind. Just some thoughts.

I know that would make it run, swim, bike, but that's okay right? We don't have any professional triathaloners amongst us do we?
